LKPP: Low Key Product Photography

I’ve done a lot of high key product shots in the past and have never really dabbled in low key photos… that is until I tried to shoot fire against a white background with multiple light sources and no gobos. What a pain!!

I thought I’d give some shots a chance recently and figured I’d post up the results… This is black foam core being used as a base surface and rear black backdrop. (though only as a backup as I used my directional lighting to control fall off). Yes, I do realize that only ONE of these pics will look truly lowkey. I have a second but it’s not getting posted today…

On to the pics!!

Thanksgiving… NOT!!!

So yeah, I’ve been giving thanks all day about all kinds of things but last night I went out and gave myself a reason to give some extra thanks lol. I bought one of these… (matchbox car for size reference of Roku and the 46″ monster lol)

On the recommendation of a friend I also ordered Season One of a show called Eureka. If it’s anything like my friend described, it should be a pretty awesome show. :)

I leave my blog post with a self portrait I just did with my fisheye. I haven’t busted that sucker out in a while but here she is about four inches from the mirror lol:

Photography light study… of sorts…

As a photographer, you’ve gotta challenge yourself at times to stay on your A-game. One of the ways to do that is to look at other photographer’s techniques and mimic them. Then you get to learn some nifty tricks about lighting. I didn’t nail these perfectly but then again when you’re using a magazine cover as a gobo and a magazine subscription card as a snoot, you can’t expect perfection lol. I tried though. :)

Yeah, the different colored jackets is one of those small details that I just went with because of what was available lol. The light isn’t QUITE as concentrated on the face as I shot it but my space to shoot in was extremely limited so I couldn’t move my main snooted light back any further. The background light is a single SB600 pointed at the back wall. Both flashes were triggered with cheapo RF602s from china :)

This second light study was from a strobist posting…

Looking at this one in retrospect, I really missed it lol. I’ll try it again later lol.

LiT leaders… make an announcement video?

A couple of them to be exact (and correct my own title lol).

Today, the LiT leaders went upstairs with video-master J. Kisser to make a sweet set of videos for the kids. Here are some pics from the video shoot.

(who was dumb enough to give me the boom mic??)

(when did I get smart enough to grab my 11-16 while I held the boom!? lol)

Enjoy :D

That’s all I could get as a photographer/grip. Holding the boom mic meant no shots while any filming was going on and none of me while filming an announcement with Pastor applejacks. *sigh*. Maybe next time RJ will get there sooner since he’s taller than I am. :D

SV Mod meet at the batcave…

Yessir, as one of my hobbies overlaps another, there is an inevitable set of pictures created. :)

Photography + Motorcycling = my most recent set of pictures.

Here are a couple pictures from that set. :) The whole set can be found HERE.

Overall it was a productive meet. A lot of hot dogs and brauts were eaten. Maybe even some of the kids mac-n-cheese lol. Good times :D

This is half of what motorcycling is all about. If you own a bike and never work on it, I IMPLORE you to take your hand to a wrench. It’s rewarding like nothing else :D

Pulled the trigger on a new lens…

Transcript of the above video:

So in celebration of my 29th year of life on this wonderful third rock from that blazing ball of helium in the sky, I pulled the trigger on a new lens.

WHOOO DOGGY is she a PERTY lens!!!

/redneck accent

That’s right… via UPS right now there is a Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 AF-S/G/ED/N lens on the way to my hands!! Two pounds of professional goodness all waiting to unlock the range of photos that I usually capture via “foot zoom”.

CAN YOU TELL I’M EXCITED!!!!

My next two posts will feature a few blogs and photographers that I respect heavily :D
